George Eliot - Daniel Deronda
Ignorance gives one a large range of probabilities.
George Eliot
Victorian age. Secrets, etiquette, double meaning of the look - those are the attributes of the movie we are going to talk about. George Elliot books always attracted much attention and it is not an exception.
This movie takes us almost two centuries back, when people were sincere and noble in their deeds. The bad people, as well as their acts were revealed and none would want to communicate with them. But it was Victorian age, when everything was concealed and covered under the layers of lies.
People do not change, as Dr. House likes to say. People do not want to change. They just want to look nicer in someone's eyes and that is all. No secret, no mystery. The same story happened here. Once we turn to Gwendolen Harleth, we can see the core character of the movie.
Gambling Reveals True Character
She is selfish and that is all. She is a gambler. She doesn't want to make any money in a way everyone does. She is searching for easy ways to get rich. She meets Daniel in a casino at a roulette table. She blows all her money.
Later Gwendolen learns that her family urgently needs money and in order not to start a job of a cleaner. She pawns the necklace and comes back to the casino to win the money back. But how you do that in roulette game? It is quite stupid to rely on fortune if you have the precious thing.
She lost all her fortune but noble Daniel redeemed the necklace and gave it back to Gwendolen. It reveals her true nature. She was never a hardworking person and we see how people value what they have.
Later she got married with a cruel guy but you don't actually feel sorry for her. She got what she deserved. She didn't even inherit a half of his earnings after he drowned.
The movie is shot in a perfect manner. It is a good example of the costumes and customs revived. If you want action, you should watch Run Lola Run movie, or if you want more emotions and love, The Cooler is just for you.
