Everything starts when he receives the order and he needs to go to Vegas. But we don't know it yet. We just know that a guy plays with the loaded dice. He is caught but he manages to run away but his partner, actually it is her is caught by the players and is beaten till she fainted.
Next shot. A journalist comes to the hospital and learns the whole situation. And then he learns that it is his wife Joan, whom he did not see for a … year…
Rewind
Everything starts with David, the husband, and Joan, the wife, coming to Vegas. He is writing a series of articles on the Hoover Dam and she decided not to waste time but to take some candid shots of the gamblers in the city. She gets caught but the casino boss lets her go and offers to play with the house chips. And gradually she caught the gambling bug. Just like the Jack in the movie The Croupier said "Gambling's not about money... Gambling's about not facing reality, ignoring the odds."
She steals money from her husband to win back the money she lost. Then she pawns her camera. And she wins back the loss. Then her sister comes to the town David has to leave the town. The ladies stay there. When next time David calls from Chicago, he figures out that his wife is a gambler.
He takes all his savings and wants to buy a house by the sea to write a book and heal his wife. But Joan steals that cash, and he is pissed off. He offers her to come back home. But no, and of course she lost all the money and decided to work for one man Corigan (she was on a winning streak only with his help).
She loses everything. She takes random jobs and lives in a shanty place. And then happens that moment with beating. Her husband wants her back or at least back to the normal life. But she is undergoing personal crisis.
The movie is twisted and not clear in some moments. But the authors tried to show and reveal the gambling addiction back in year 1949. It is like The Gambler movie, where the people addicted to gambling are doing wrong and stupid things.
